Hidden Quaint Nyonya Restaurant in Bangsar

I came across a hidden gem recently while I was driving around in Bangsar. A quaint restaurant in a corner along the back alley of Bangsar Utama caught my eyes. From the outside, it look like an old kopitiam. I was curious to know what kind of dishes they serve. It was still early in the morning, right after Bangsar dwellers clocked in for work. During that time it was empty. I told myself that I must check that place out since my tummy was growling begging to be fed.

I’m glad I did.

This quaint restaurant is relatively new. So it’s not so quaint at all. But the setup and deco made the place feel nostalgic. I remember the time when I used to travel with my parents to Taiping or Teluk Intan, stopping by at some old kopitiam. This place feels like that. Nostalgic and old, yet new.

Straits Food Company is located along the back alley of the main road of Bangsar Utama. Finding the place can be a challenge at first. But I’ll give you an easy hint. Drive along Bangsar Utama main road heading towards KL Sentral. On the left, there will be a junction right before the Klinik Pergigian Bangsar. Turn in and you can see the restaurant at the back corner.

As I sat down at the table, I was warmly greeted by the staff who presented me with the menu. Looking at the menu, I came to realise that this is a nyonya restaurant. Great! I love nyonya food.

You can sit el-fresco style if that’s your fancy. But the sun was shining bright and it was a little bit warm so I decided to sit inside instead.

My choice of breakfast food that day was Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Kunyit, Pai Tee and Teh Tarik.

I can tell you this. The nasi lemak taste just like how I remembered as when I was much younger, eating at an old kopitiam somewhere back in time. Have you ever had something that so good, you immediately felt like you travel back in time or teleported to a certain place or a certain time? Yeah. Something like that. The “lemak” in the nasi lemak is scrumptious. The sambal is just nice. And the ayam goreng kunyit? Crunchy and tasty. They made it as simple as they can. Sometimes, being simple is way better.

The pai tee is not to be missed as well. I haven’t had a good pai tee in a long time. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Don’t forget the chili sauce to go with it. Definitely a must try at Straits Food Company.

Teh tarik is a must while having a good breakfast meal. And the teh tarik here is wholesomely delicious. I would say that this is one of the most “kaw” teh tarik out there. I love the teh tarik at the restaurant in Sunway Pyramid Megalanes, but this is a very good match to that. Not so sweet, just yummy kaw.

All that hearty breakfast was so good. Especially having it at a quaint looking restaurant. The ambiance is nostalgic. I said it once and I’ll say it again, nostalgic.

Oh. They also have these old style “biskut” in a huge tin for you to munch on. Most of it are the ones you had when you were a lot younger. You’ll recognise most of it when you see it for yourself.

Other than the old skool style nasi lemak, you can also have a bowl of nyonya laksa and chicken pongteh with white rice. Both are highly recommended as described in Foursquare by those who have tried it. Of course I will try it on my next visit. I have a few other dishes that I want to try. I’ll try the Malacca style popiah, mee goreng sejuk, otak-otak and cendol drink to wash it down.

Now then. If or when you’re in Bangsar area and feeling hungry, be sure to check out Straits Food Company. You can either Google for the location or search for it in Waze. But my landmark for you is the Klinik Pergigian Bangsar.
